Watched "Star Trek: Into Darkness" the other night, and without revealing anything, I will say this:
It is a known fact JJ Abrams was/is not a Star Trek fan, but had a Star Trek fan made this movie, they would most likely not stray from the source material for fear of angering purists. With that said, I had no problem with the route Abrams took, and I am (dare I say it) a Trekkie.
And if we want to go the more technical route, the Abrams version of "Trek" is an alternate timeline, as was explained in '09.
And just like the first film in '09, this is the shot in the arm the franchise needed, and enjoy the film for what it is:
Entertainment.
